A Note About
the Gnome’s Nook
The Gnome’s Nook is one of the most mythic and memorable traditions at our Children’s Holiday Faire.
It is a place created just for the children — a magical, star-lit shop where they choose and purchase gifts for their loved ones all on their own. For many children, this is the very first time they select something special for their parents and family independently. It is a small but meaningful rite of passage.
Inside the Nook, children are lovingly guided by our seventh and eighth graders, along with grade parent volunteers, who quietly support the flow of the experience. Adults do not enter with the children, as this moment is meant to belong to them — their choosing, their confidence, their surprise.
We know that for some children, this step can feel big. And that’s okay.
A core part of Waldorf education is honoring readiness — trusting that growth unfolds in its own time. If your child is not yet comfortable entering the Gnome’s Nook alone, it is perfectly appropriate to wait and try again another year. Delayed gratification, anticipation, and longing are not things to rush — they are important companions in childhood development.
Our wish is that each child meets the Gnome’s Nook when it feels empowering, not overwhelming.
Thank you for helping us preserve the quiet beauty and meaning of this tradition for the children who are ready to step into it.
Many Hands Make Light Work!
In addition to the Family Contributions above, all families are asked to have at least one adult work a one-hour shift at The Children’s Holiday Faire (and you are always welcome to sign up for more!).
To complete your Faire commitments,
you will need to use the sign-up buttons below at least twice:
1️⃣ Sign up for your grade-specific volunteer shift
2️⃣ Sign up for your contribution using the Tea Garden, Fairy Shoppe, or Gnomes’ Nook buttons — depending on what you are planning to bring or make.
Grandparents, teenagers, college students, and extended family members are warmly invited to join in and sign up as well!
Special note for 7th & 8th Grades:
7th and 8th grade students are required to work a one-hour shift in the Gnomes’ Nook. Parent volunteers are also greatly appreciated there.
